Course Description

Each purchase that is made can impact the environment, the economy, and the business community. There are many effective strategies for incorporating sustainability into the procurement process. This can include specifications for products with sustainable attributes, like recycled content or low VOCs. It also involves additional requirements for the supplier, such as identifying the chemicals their products are made of, and reporting the percentage of green products they provide to an organization. Third-party product certifications will be covered, including EPEAT, LEED, and Green Seal.

Online Format 

This course is delivered entirely online and can be completed at a pace determined by the student. A variety of learning methods will be used, including the following:

  • Instructional videos on key concepts
  • Discussion blog posts with other students
  • Reading assignments on specific procurement topics
  • Research on leading procurement practices
  • Writing assignments consisting of short topical papers
  • Online examinations focusing on key concepts

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the importance of sustainability in procurement and supply chain management. Students will learn about the evolution of green purchasing initiatives and gain an appreciation of what organizations throughout the world are doing in this area. At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Acquire an understanding of sustainability and its impact globally
  • Consider the attributes of sustainable products and services
  • Identify key terminology associated with sustainable procurement
  • Gain an appreciation for the importance of diversity and equity in procurement

All resources needed for this course will be provided at no additional cost. This includes industry articles, procurement case studies, and topical videos.

Completion of this online course qualifies for 8 contact hours (CH) of continuing education. Proof of completion can be found in your account under Certificates, provided by Birkdale Publishing, which will qualify for CH credit for UPPCC, NIGP, ISM, and NCMA.
